True Car Repair Costs in Islamabad (What I Learned from Passengers)

(Look bhai, main driver hoon. Not a mechanic. Not a money advisor. These prices are what people told me, what I paid, what I saw on bills. February to April 2026. But prices change. Petrol changes. Parts change. FBR ne import values revise kar di hain. So this is just… guidance. Not a contract. Not a promise. Always get written estimate before they start work. And don’t blame me if something goes wrong. I’m just sharing.)

So.

Where do I start.

Oil change. Everyone needs it. Everyone gets ripped off sometimes.

I had a passenger. He went to a big dealership in Islamabad. Somewhere in G-8 maybe. They charged him 4,500 rupees. For oil change. I asked him what oil. He said “I don’t know. They said synthetic.”

Same car. Same oil. My local guy in I-8 Markaz? 2,800. Total. Oil plus filter plus labor. Oil was about 2,000, filter 300, labor 500.

So.

I told him. Next time. Go to I-10. There’s a small workshop behind the chaaye shop. They charge 300-400 labor only. You buy oil yourself from auto parts shop. Oil 1,800-2,200. Filter 300. Total 2,400-2,900. He saved almost 2,000 rupees. Happy.

But. Yaar. Some people don’t want the hassle. They want one place. Done. Fine. Pay more.

Now brakes.

Brake pads. This one is serious. Don’t go too cheap.

One passenger. Young guy. New driver. Bought local pads for 1,200 rupees. Fitted them. After 3 months… screeching noise. Metal on metal. He ignored. Then one day… brake pedal went soft. Almost hit a car.

He came to me. Shaking. I said “bhai, pads kharab ho gaye. Disc bhi scratch ho sakta hai.” He went to mechanic. Disc had to be resurfaced. Extra 1,500. New pads 2,500. Total 4,000. If he bought good pads first time? 2,500-3,000 total. Saved 1,000 and a lot of fear.

So. Brake pads. OEM or good quality. 2,500-4,000 per set for front or rear. Labor 800-1,200. Total 3,300-5,200. Pay it. Don’t cry.

AC gas refill. Easy one.

Summer time. Everyone’s AC stops cooling. Passenger in my car. He was sweating. I said “bhai, gas low hai. Go to AC specialist in I-8. The one near fruit market.” He went. 600 rupees gas refill. 400 labor. Total 1,000. AC cold again.

Another passenger. Mechanic told him “compressor”. 8,000 rupees. He almost paid. Then he remembered my article about the relay. He checked relay first. 250 rupees. Problem solved. He called me. “Mohsin bhai, aap ne bacha liya.”

So. AC problem. Check relay (250). Check gas (600-1,000). Then compressor (8,000-25,000). Order matters.

Clutch plate. Ye dard hai.

True Car Repair Costs in Islamabad (What I Learned from Passengers)

I had a passenger. He was a delivery driver. His car clutch started slipping. He ignored. One day, on a hill, car wouldn’t move. Smoke. Smell.

Towed to workshop. Clutch plate + pressure plate + bearing. Parts 6,000. Labor 4,000. Total 10,000.

He said “brother, if I fixed it early, could be less?” I said “maybe. Ignorance costs.”

Where to go for clutch? Gawal Mandi near Raja Bazar Rawalpindi. Specialized shops. Negotiate. Labor 2,500-4,000 there. Parts you buy yourself. 4,000-8,000 depends on car model. Total 6,500-12,000. Still expensive. But necessary.

Shock absorbers.

Islamabad roads are… you know. Potholes. Everywhere. After rain, new potholes appear. I drive. I feel every bump.

One passenger. Old Mehran. Rear shocks gone. Car was bouncing. He said “bhai, I feel sea sick.” I laughed. Then I told him.

KYB shock for his car? 4,500 per piece. Labor 1,000 per piece. Two rear shocks? 9,000 parts + 2,000 labor = 11,000. He winced. But got it done.

Then he needed alignment. 1,500 extra. Tyres were wearing uneven. So.

Shocks + alignment = 12,500. Painful. But necessary. Otherwise tyre cost more later.

Car battery.

Simple. No labor. You go battery shop. They install free.

One passenger bought battery from shop in I-10. 60Ah Exide. 12,500 rupees. He checked manufacturing date on sticker. It was 8 months old. He said “bhai, yeh purani hai.” Shopkeeper said “chalay gi.” He insisted on newer one. Got one 3 months old. Same price.

Always check date. Within 6 months. Otherwise battery sitting in warehouse. Health down. You’ll replace sooner.

Smaller battery for Mehran? 9,000-11,000. For Civic/Corolla bigger? 13,000-18,000. Some expensive brands 20,000+. But you don’t need that. Just good quality local. Osaka, AG, Phoenix, Exide. Fine.

Timing belt.

This is the one people ignore. Then engine kaboom.

Passenger. He had a Toyota Corolla. 95,000 km. Timing belt never changed. I told him “change karo.” He said “nayi hai, looks fine.” Three months later. Driving on Expressway. Belt snapped. Engine valves bent. Repair 55,000 rupees.

He called me. Crying. “Mohsin bhai, kitna bada loss.”

Timing belt kit (belt + tensioner + maybe water pump) = 3,000-6,000. Labor = 3,500-5,000. Total 6,500-11,000. Do it every 60,000-80,000 km or 5 years. It’s like insurance. Cheap insurance.

Now workshops. Real names. Real prices.

Nazir Automobiles in G-8 / I-9. Professional. Good for luxury cars. But expensive. One passenger paid 8,000 for brake work. Another paid 4,000 labour for something small. Reviews online say “now they are looting on parts prices.” So. Get estimate. Compare. Don’t just trust.

Fareedia Autos in Sudran Kalan. Not central. But good prices. Competitive. Phone number on Google Maps. Worth drive if you have time.

Local I-8 workshops near the car markets. Labor only. Small jobs. Oil change, filter, plug. 300-500 per hour. Big jobs? Negotiate fixed price.

Auto Surgeon somewhere in Islamabad. Transparent pricing. They give detailed estimate before starting. One passenger said “they explain everything.” Good reputation.

Hidden markets for parts.

Gawal Mandi near Raja Bazar Rawalpindi. Clutch, brakes, suspension. Big market. Also used parts. You can find deals.

Sultan Ka Khoo and Chah Sultan. Used parts. Cheap. But risky. Inspect before buying. I saw a control arm there for 1,500. New would be 4,500. But the used one had cracked bushings. Rust. No. Buy new for safety parts. For mirrors, bumper, lights? Used okay.

Babu Mohalla on Peshawar Road. OEM and aftermarket. More expensive than other markets but better quality. 4,500 for control arm. Peace of mind.

Online. PakWheels, OLX, Facebook Marketplace. Sometimes good. Sometimes scam. Meet in person. Test part. Don’t pay advance. Too many fake.

Important news. FBR revised customs values for imported engine parts in April 2026. What does that mean? Prices for piston rings, engine components will go up. Workshops will charge more. So if your car needs repair… don’t delay too long. Prices may increase.

Also petrol price today is Rs. 393.35 per litre (April 25, 2026). Everything connected. Fuel up. Transport up. Shipping up. Part prices up. Repair up.

So.

How to save money. Simple rules.

Buy parts yourself. Workshop markup 20-30%. Go to parts shop. Buy. Take to workshop. Pay only labor.

Get written estimate. Before any work. Ask breakdown: parts, labor, quantity. If they refuse? Walk away.

Get second opinion. If mechanic says “engine kaput” — go to 2-3 workshops. Compare. Ask questions. Sometimes first guy is lying. Or just wrong.

Don’t act desperate. If mechanic sees you in a hurry… price goes up. Like magic.

Bring a mechanic friend. Someone who knows engines. They will save you from stupid mistakes.

Invest in safety parts. Brakes, suspension, steering, tyres. Not the area to save 500 rupees. Your life matters.

Maintain a logbook. Dates, mileage, work done, receipts. Helps with resale value. Also helps you remember. I forget. So I write.

Final story.

One passenger. He ignored suspension noise for months. Then pothole. Then control arm snapped. Car broke down on Expressway. Tow truck 2,000. Repair 25,000. Total 27,000.

If he fixed early? 8,000. He saved 0. He lost 19,000.

So.

Bookmark this. Share with friends. Get your car checked. Small problems become big problems. Big problems become expensive problems.

And always. Always. Get a second opinion. And a third. Why not.
