BAIC BJ40 — The Chinese “Jeep Wrangler” That Looks Tough But Is It Reliable
You see it on the road. Your head turns. Big boxy shape. Removable roof like a Wrangler. Aggressive front. High ground clearance. Bhai, gaari hai .
BJ40 Plus. Price? 1.19 crore. 11.9 million. Honorable Edition . Yes, 1.19 crore. For a Chinese off-roader.
Is it worth? Or is it a beautiful headache?
Mein ne research ki. Owners se baat ki. Reviews parhay. Forums mein raat jagay. Specs check kiye.
Yeh hai sach. Ganda sach. Messy sach.
*(Disclaimer: Bhai, main driver hoon. Mechanic nahi. Ye prices June 2026 ki hain. BJ40 Plus ka fuel average 6-8 km/l hai. Parts availability improving hai lekin abhi Toyota jaisi nahi. Apni research karo. Test drive karo. Warranty check karo.)*

The Look. Bhai, kamaal hai.
First thing. Look. Chinese Wrangler. But not exactly copy. BAIC took inspiration. Heavily .
Design theme “heavily inspired from Wrangler’s minimalist-rugged theme” . Side se dekho? Wrangler. Rear se dekho? Wrangler. Front? Thoda different. Grille design different. Bumper different. But overall? Wrangler vibes.
One owner wrote: “BAIC is a Chinese automaker and has now launched an SUV in Pakistan which you can take the liberty of calling it a Chinese Wrangler” .
Road presence? Bhai, log dekhte hain. In a world full of Fortuners and Revos? You stand out .
Doors removable hain. Hard top removable hai. Soft top bhi option hai . Jungle safari feel. You take off roof, bhai, kya scene hai.
One owner said: “Being an owner of a BJ40 since almost 6 months, I would simply say its the best bang for your buck. Lastly, in a world full of fortiners and revos, be unique and own a BJ40” .
The Price. 1.19 Crore.
Bhai, price is… something.
BJ40 Plus Honorable Edition: PKR 11,985,000 . Ex-factory. On-road? 1.25 crore ke aas paas.
For comparison:
- Jeep Wrangler: 2.85 crore . So BJ40 is half price.
- Toyota Fortuner Sigma: 1.1 crore.
- Hyundai Santa Fe: 1.2 crore.
So BJ40 is priced like a Fortuner. But BJ40 is Wrangler category. So “value for money” in that sense.
Used market? BJ40 (non-Plus) starting 73.5 lakh . Minimum price 46 lakh for older models . So used options hain agar budget tight hai.
One owner wrote: “I visited automotive in Karachi. I actually liked its build quality, doors felt heavy and bonnet was exceptionally heavy” .
Heavy build. Solid feel. But then problems start.
The Fuel Average. Bhai, ruk jao.
Ye wala part bura hai. Very bura.
Official figures: City 8 KM/L. Highway 10 KM/L .
But real world? Owners report worse. Much worse.
One owner wrote: “Fuel consumption is not very appreciable, it is giving me around 6km/ltr in city, but common thats something u should expect from an offroader jeep” .
6 km/l. City mein. 1.19 crore ki gaari. Petrol 280+ ka hai. Tank capacity 75 liters .
Ek full tank? 75 x 280 = 21,000 rupees. For 450-600 km range. Bhai, petrol pi jaati hai.
Another forum user asked: “How is 5km/L within city fuel average in any way acceptable from a 2L engine?”
5 km/l. Yes. Some owners report 5. So.
Monthly fuel cost calculation:
Average daily driving 20 km. 25 days per month.
500 km per month. At 6 km/l = 83 liters. 83 x 280 = 23,240 rupees per month.
This is if you drive 20 km daily. Agar zyada drive karte ho, 40-50 km daily? Fuel cost 50-60,000 per month.
So. BJ40 is not for daily commuting. It’s for weekends. For trips north. For off-road adventures. For showing off.
One owner summarized perfectly: “I understand that people consider it a risky investment since this jeep is a new entrant. I also underwent same confusion, but that confusion soon eroded once I took a test drive and knew that this is the monster I want in my garage” .
Monster. Yes. Monster fuel guzzler. But monster.
The Reliability. Bhai, yeh wala part darawana hai.
Yahan asli masla hai. Build quality? Good. Owners say doors heavy. Bonnet heavy. Feels solid .
But reliability? Issues hain. Bohot issues.
Forum owner’s nightmare:
One owner wrote a long post. Extremely disappointed.
Quote: “Extremely dissapointed by the bj40s build quality and reliability. Car has been giving trouble since the start. Took the car to workshop today for 6th time for a car that is only driven 7000kms” .
7000 km. 6 visits to workshop. Let me list problems he faced:
- Steering axle noise (fixed)
- Rear suspension loud noise in bumps
- Seat belt malfunction (fixed)
- Gear box faulty
- EPB error showing up
He wrote: “Despite all the problems covered under warranty this does not mean every one has the patience and time to keep taking the car to workshop which normally takes an entire day. Will be writing to sazgar and baic aswell” .
Bhai. 7,000 km. 6 times workshop. Gear box faulty. Suspension noise. EPB errors. And this is under warranty. But your time? Your patience? Your mental peace? Woh sab khatam.
Other issues mentioned by PakWheels pros and cons :
- Cabin noise. Loud. Wrangler mein bhi hai. But BJ40 mein bhi hai.
- Moderate high-speed handling. 120+ pe unstable feel hoti hai.
- Sluggish brakes. Bhai, brakes important hain. Sluggish brakes means danger.
- Software issues. Electronic parking brake errors. Infotainment glitches.
- Less market acceptability being a Chinese brand. Resale weak.
One review wrote: “What we don’t like – Cabin Noise, High Fuel Consumption, Moderate High-Speed Handling, Sluggish Brakes, Software Issues, Less Market acceptability being a Chinese Brand” .
So. BJ40 is not a Toyota. Not a Honda. Not even a Kia. It’s a BAIC. Chinese brand. Pakistan mein still proving itself.
The Good Parts. Kya Acha Hai?
Bhai, negatives hain. Lekin positives bhi hain.
Off-road capability. Body-on-frame platform. Robust suspension. All-wheel drive. Hill descent control. Locking differentials . True off-roader.
One owner took it north. Mountains of Gilgit and Skardu. He wrote: “I was amazed when I took it up north in mountains of gilgit and skardu it’s capabilities of off road are best in class” .
Comfort. Interior is comfy. Compared to Fortuner or Revo . Suspension is soft. Almost active suspension feel . Interior inspired from Mercedes G-wagon . Classy. Aesthetic.
Engine. 2.0L turbo. 215 HP. 320 Nm torque . For a 2.2 tonne SUV, engine is not sluggish . Power hai. Overtaking possible.
Features. Digital instrument cluster. 10.25-inch infotainment display . Cruise control. Hill start assist. Downhill assist. Traction control . Electric parking brake. Push start. Smart key .
One owner wrote after test drive: “That confusion soon eroded once I took a test drive and knew that this is the monster I want in my garage” .
Uniqueness. In a world full of Fortuners and Revos, BJ40 stands out . Log dekhte hain. Questions poochte hain.
Spare Parts. Milte Hain?
Bhai, parts availability improving hai. Slowly.
One source wrote: “Spare parts availability improving. Regular oil changes and check-ups required. Higher maintenance costs due to off-road capability. Authorized service centers available through Sazgar Motors” .
Ultima brake pads for BJ40 available: 9,499 rupees for front brake pads .
Price range for Ultima parts: 300 to 15,500 rupees . So parts exist. Not like Toyota where har gali mein milta hai. But available.
Authorized service centers through Sazgar Motors. Major cities mein hain.
But bhai, small city mein parts mushkil milenge. Mangwane pare gay. Time lage ga.
Resale Value. Kya Hoga?
Yeh wala part unclear hai. BJ40 Plus nayi hai. 2021-2022 mein aayi. So long-term resale data nahi hai.
One owner wrote: “baic bj40 is very amazing suv vehicle . But can’t make its resell due to marketing team work . company owner should give it marketing into the sunil hands pakwheel owner everything is fine” .
Translation: Amazing car. But can’t make resale because marketing weak.
Another wrote: “Less market acceptability being a Chinese Brand” .
So resale is a concern. Not like Toyota Fortuner which sells in 2 days. BJ40 will take time. Buyer will negotiate hard.
Used price for older BJ40 (non-Plus) starts 73.5 lakh . Minimum 46 lakh . So depreciation is there. Not terrible. Not great. Acceptable.
The Verdict. Is BJ40 Reliable?
Bhai, depends on your definition of reliable.
Reliable like Corolla? No. Corolla starts every morning. No drama. BJ40 will give you drama.
Reliable like off-roader? Yes. In mountains, on rough terrain, BJ40 performs. That’s its purpose.
Buy BJ40 if:
- You have another car for daily use
- You want an off-roader for trips north
- You have 1.2 crore and don’t care about fuel
- You have patience for occasional workshop visits
- You want to be unique (not another Fortuner)
- You understand Chinese cars are still building reputation
- You have warranty and don’t mind using it
Don’t buy BJ40 if:
- This is your only car for daily driving
- You care about fuel average (6-8 km/l will hurt)
- You want peace of mind and no workshop visits
- Resale value is your top priority
- You live in a small city with no dealership
- You have low patience for software issues and errors
- You expect Toyota-level reliability
One owner summed up: “Great buy and excellent value for money. Tbh, I had my doubts before purchasing this beauty but it’s been an incredible purchase, value to money, suspension, comfort and style is top notch. one thing that was putting me back was critics of Chinese cars and reliability issues. But so far so good” .
Another owner: “baic bj40 is very amazing suv vehicle . But can’t make its resell due to marketing team work” .
My take (driver’s honest opinion).
Bhai. BJ40 is a beast. Looks amazing. Off-road capable. Comfortable interior. Unique road presence.
But bhai, beast ko khana chahiye. Petrol piyega. Workshop jayega. Software issues honge. Suspension noise ayegi.
Agar aap ka dil hai, passion hai, paisa hai, doosri gaari hai? Le lo. Enjoy karo. Life short hai.
Agar aap practical ho, budget tight hai, yeh ek hi gaari hai ghar mein? Mat lo. Fortuner le lo. Ya used Prado. Ya Corolla le kar sukoon karo.
One forum user wrote: “Let’s ignore that that is the built quality of a car that costs 78 lac and competes with a Hilux in its price” . BJ40 Plus 1.19 crore hai. Fortuner 1.1 crore. Same price range. Fortuner more reliable. BJ40 more unique.
Your choice.
Bookmark this page. Jab BJ40 dekhne jao, test drive karo. Fuel average check karo. Suspension noise suno. Brakes check karo. Software errors poocho. Warranty terms samjho. Phir faisla karo.
Aur agar le lo, toh workshop ka number saved rakhna. Aap ko zaroorat pare gi.

P.P.S. — Not a mechanic. Not a dealer. BJ40 is a Chinese Wrangler. Looks tough. Reliability? Question mark. Apna wallet dekho. Apna patience dekho. Phir faisla karo. Aur warranty zaroor lena. Aap ko zaroorat pare gi.
